Website redesign checklist that protects your SEO

Short answer

Before a redesign, export every current URL, note which pages bring traffic and leads, keep or redirect each URL with a 301, carry over titles and descriptions, keep tracking in place, and test speed and forms before switching the domain.

Before you start

Crawl the current site and list every URL. Pull the top pages from Google Search Console and analytics. Note forms, phone links and conversion events. Back up the old site.

During the build

Map every old URL to a new one. Keep good content and improve it rather than deleting it. Set titles, meta descriptions, headings and schema for each page. Keep images light and fonts few.

Launch day

Put 301 redirects live, submit the new sitemap in Search Console, test every form and phone link, confirm analytics and ad pixels fire, and check mobile speed.

First month after launch

Watch Search Console for 404 errors and coverage issues, fix broken links quickly, and compare leads week by week against the old site.

Will I lose Google rankings after a redesign?

A small dip for a few weeks is common. With proper redirects and kept content, rankings usually recover and often improve.

Should I change my URLs during a redesign?

Only when the new structure is clearly better. Every changed URL needs a 301 redirect.
