How long does it take to build a website?

Short answer

A simple 5 to 10 page business website usually takes 2 to 4 weeks. A custom designed corporate site takes 4 to 8 weeks, an online store 6 to 10 weeks, and a web app or portal 3 months or more. Content readiness and quick feedback matter more than anything else.

Typical timelines by type

Landing page: about 1 week. Small business website: 2 to 4 weeks. Custom corporate site with many sections: 4 to 8 weeks. E-commerce store with a large catalogue: 6 to 10 weeks. Custom web application or portal: 3 to 6 months, often released in phases.

Where the time goes

Roughly a fifth of the time is planning and content, a quarter is design, about a third is building, and the rest is testing, fixes and launch. Skipping the planning step rarely saves time; it usually moves the delay to the end.

What slows projects down

Missing text and photos, many people giving feedback separately, changing the scope halfway, and waiting on third parties such as payment gateways or domain access. Having one decision maker and content ready can cut weeks.

Can a website be built in one week?

A single landing page or a very small site with ready content can be. A proper multi page business site usually needs at least two weeks to do well.

Does a redesign take less time than a new site?

Not always. A redesign also needs URL mapping and redirects to protect search rankings, which adds planning time.
