- Sound effects and smooth animations on every move
Challenge
Tic-Tac-Toe is a game almost everyone knows, and almost everyone gets bored of it fast because good players always draw. The idea behind Box.xo was to keep the rules people already know but add enough depth that every move matters, and make it easy to play with a friend or alone, straight from a browser.
Approach
Rachit and Jenil from MaJe Technologies designed and built Box.xo as a web-based multiplayer game. The board is made of 9 interconnected mini-boards, and the square you play decides which board your opponent has to play in next, so you have to think a few moves ahead. You win by taking three mini-boards in a row. Players can face an AI on Easy, Medium or Hard, or create a private Friend Room and invite someone with a code, a link or a WhatsApp message. Each turn has an 18-second timer, and if time runs out the game makes a move for you, so matches keep moving. A stats screen tracks wins, draws, losses and level. The front end is built with React, TypeScript and Vite, styled with Tailwind CSS and Radix UI, and animated with Framer Motion and CSS transitions, with sound from the Web Audio API. A Node.js and Express backend with Socket.IO keeps both players in sync in real time.
Outcome
Box.xo is live at boxxo.onrender.com and plays in any modern browser on phones and computers, solo against the AI or live with a friend in a private room, and shows how MaJe Technologies builds real-time web apps and games end to end.
