How to plan a brand film or ad shoot

Short answer

Start with one message the viewer should remember, write a short script, turn it into a shot list, lock locations, people and props, plan the day hour by hour, and decide all delivery sizes (16:9, 9:16, 1:1) before shooting.

One message

A film that tries to say everything says nothing. Pick one idea and one action you want viewers to take.

Script and shot list

Write the voice over or dialogue, then list every shot needed to tell it. This is what keeps shoot days calm.

Logistics

Location permissions, power, sound conditions, talent, wardrobe and product samples. Plan for light: morning and late afternoon are kinder outdoors.

Think about every platform

Shoot with vertical and square crops in mind so one shoot gives a website film, YouTube ad and reels.

How long is a typical shoot day?

Most commercial shoots fit in one long day. Larger films with several locations need two or more.

Do I need actors?

Not always. Real staff and customers often feel more honest. For ads, a confident presenter can help.
