Core Web Vitals in 2026: What Actually Makes a Website Fast
· MaJe Research Team
Most visitors meet your brand on a mid-range phone on mobile data. Core Web Vitals measure what they feel. Here is what matters and what we do about it.
The three numbers
- LCP (Largest Contentful Paint), how fast the main content appears. Aim for under 2.5 seconds.
- CLS (Cumulative Layout Shift), how much the page jumps while loading. Aim for under 0.1.
- INP (Interaction to Next Paint), how quickly the page responds to taps. Aim for under 200 ms.
Build choices that move the numbers
- Pre-render pages. Static HTML reaches the screen before any JavaScript runs.
- Ship less JavaScript. Every library is a cost on a low-end phone. Load animation code only when the device can handle it.
- Size every image. Width and height attributes prevent layout shift; modern formats cut bytes.
- Animate only transform and opacity. These run on the GPU and don’t trigger layout.
- Respect reduced motion and Save-Data. Some users ask for less, give it to them.
- Delay heavy embeds. Videos should load when someone presses play, not on page load.
Why it matters for SEO and AI search
Fast, well-structured pages are easier for search engines and AI assistants to crawl, understand and cite. Speed is not the only ranking factor, but it is the one you fully control.
